The Power of Words

Many major events in the past have been recorded with words. Look at the first human going to the moon, "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."-JFK Words are a means of communication and persuasion, for instance look at politicians, the only way that people elect them and know what they stand for is by their words, no matter how much of that is garbage. Look at persuation, one man got a whole country to commit genocide. Hitler was a crazy person, but a great speaker, he made a whole country think that killing off so many people is an okay thing to do.
On sunday 9/20/09 I celebrated a major muslim holiday Eid al Fitr. Eid al Fitr comes to the end of every Ramadan and is celebrated all around the world. But on every Eid, we have our Iman, or religious leader speak to us. He said a few things that are very powerfull, such as that we must forgive. All the disagreements that people have should be forgiven. He further went on to say that never hold grudges and always think of that bad incident when you see someone. We as muslims are peacefull people and we must act peaceful. Then he also went on and told us to practice our religion properly like pray five times give charity and respect one's spouse ect. But throughout that speech people were captivated, the words had so muck power, even though this was a pretty common speech.
The power of words is everywhere you see. Look at the fundamentals of our country, as other students pointed out, the constitution and the declaration of independence are a prime example of the power of words. When the early colonies declared independence that was something that never happened before, Britain was one of the, or the, strongest country on this planet at that time. Our Bill of rights insures us rights by our country. Without that we have nothing to protect us from our government. Words was something of proof that slavery was abolished, and words were something that proved that woman can vote, and words were something that 18 year old had the right to vote etc.
Words will always have power, whether it be bad or good. We must take note of the power of words so that another Hitler will never happen again. But hope that good change will happen like the abolishion of slavery. I never thought of the power of words until now, looking at it there are careers build of the power of words, like authors, speech writers and Lawyers. At work I even see little kids who can barely talk try to persuade their parents to buy them candy. I see that words give me the right to actively participate voting without any problem. I now see that words may be the most powerful thing in the world.
